I thought maybe this could be added as a custom field where the data type is another contact, but a generic "related contacts" field would be great.

That's something that I'm missing in other contact apps as well. I sometimes have to search based on the address to remember who's married to whom. But that doesn't work for e.g. someone's mother-in-law etc.
