Hi there, adding CardDAV sync may also be really useful to allow 2way sync with Outlook / office 365. The add-on https://caldavsynchronizer.org works really well. Have you looked into this at all?

If we sync Google to iPhone via CardDAV, and add Dex, will that
Allow Dex and Google to sync?
M
Matthew Silberman
Thanks for the follow-up, Tim. That's a great question. I think the answer might be "no" since Dex would have its own CardDAV server (inc. login and password) rather than sharing one with Google, but we can look further into this.
Matthew Silberman
Hi everyone, we appreciate the excitement for two-way contact sync and look forward to releasing it in the near future!
For transparency, we want to share details in advance on how this feature will work. You’ll be able to see and modify your Dex contacts from your computer or phone’s contacts app; changes you make there will show up in Dex, and vice versa. This will be possible using a technology called CardDAV.
What this feature won’t include is the ability to sync contacts in both directions between Google Contacts and Dex, since Google Contacts doesn’t allow you to add and sync a CardDAV account.
We know this may change the workflow a bit from what some of you had in mind, and if you’re one of those people, please reach out at matthew@getdex.com.
For everyone else, we can’t wait to deliver this feature and make your contact management experience even better!

Matthew Silberman so any changes I make in Dex will no longer flow back into Google Contacts?
M
Matthew Silberman
Hey Jonathan — they will! We're going to continue offering our existing One-Way Google Contacts Sync, but for users who want two-way sync, we'll point them towards this new CardDAV feature.

Matthew Silberman thanks for the update. Will this work with GMail and Superhuman? I don't see a way to add a CardDAV server to either of them
M
Matthew Silberman
Hi Ramon, you'll still be able to see Dex contacts in either of those if you use our One-Way Google Contacts Sync, but as you pointed out, you won't be able to add CardDAV and get two-way sync with those.
So, for example, if you're in Superhuman and change any details in a Dex contact, those changes won't sync back to Dex.

Matthew Silberman It seems that CardDav is supported with Google Contacts: https://developers.google.com/people/carddav
M
Matthew Silberman
Hey Simo, unfortunately that page is talking about how to access your Google Contacts outside of Google, not how to get external contacts (i.e. from Dex) into Google Contacts (which isn't supported).

Matthew Silberman It reads "Your client application can use the CardDAV API to create new contacts, edit or delete existing contacts, and query for contacts" - to me that sounds like a full sync should be possible? To me (and I guess to many others), a full sync with Google Contacts is what matters rather than a sync with the phones contact app. Really hope this can be done at some point
M
Matthew Silberman
Hi Florian, sadly the "client application" refers to, for example, the iOS contacts app being able to add, edit, or delete Google Contacts — not to Google Contacts being able to add, edit, or delete Dex contacts.

Matthew Silberman awesome! I wanted to write with encouragement and appreciation this is starting.
If Dex can power Google Contacts and be the central hub for everything, I think it is a game changer.

Matthew Silberman So excited!! I've been waiting for this before I come back to Dex. Truly the best personal CRM I've ever used and I miss it -- but the lack of two-way-sync created more issues than I could manage. I'll be back as soon as it's ready.

I'm so happy to hear that, Kelli! Excited to ship this as soon as we can.

CardDAV Sync / using Dex as a 'Contacts Source'

I use CardDAV-Sync on my own server to sync contacts with custom fields across devices. Right now I can access those contacts through my iPhone Calendar, but direct connection with the server would be even better.

I use Cloze in this capacity - on my iphone I use the CardDAV as the golden source. The Google sync has limitations (photos dont come over) I would much rather commit to using DEX only - for all contacts and have it as the default contacts on my iPhone. Syncing always gets screwed up. I would like to turn off iphone contacts, gmail contacts etc on my iphone
